Connect Savannah December 16th, 2009
By Bill Deyoung
Feature: A Vocal Christmas. Peter Shannon and the Savannah Philharmonic celebrate the Season.
Savannah Philharmonic Conductor and Artistic Director Peter Shannon notes:
"The 80-person chorus plus guest soloists and a 10 member brass ensemble will perform everything from Sleigh Ride to Jesu,Joy of Man's Desiring.
A lot of the repertoire for this concert is based around what I think my mother would like to hear. She is very musical but has never played an instrument or sung in an orchestra...she just likes listening to music".
The guest soloists include soprano Tina Zenker Williams, baritone Jason Moon, organist Paul Fejko and fellow Irishman Harry O'Donoghue. Shannon's idea is to keep the program brisk. "We have the chorus, we have the brass...it's still classical, whereas Harry comes out with a guitar and he's just got this way about him. He's very personable, with a beautiful voice.
I think he represents Ireland in a way that's not typical. Although he sings in pubs and clubs, he's not the typical 'bring your guitar and shout bawdy songs in the pub'. He's very refined, is how I describe him. He's a class act".
Savannah Philharmonic Chorus: Carols in the Cathedral. Friday, December 18, 2009. 8.00PM.
